the castle of the king of the birds [2024]
Made for an exhibition celebrating the Beatles’ recording sessions that resulted in the album Let it Be , this piece is a response to Day 4 of the sessions (7th January 1969) as documented in Peter Jackson’s film Get Back. The film of that day’s session captures the remarkable moment when Paul McCartney spontaneously creates the song Get Back. During the same session the band briefly improvise a piece they call The Castle of the King of the Birds , an instrumental track which was never released. The painting is a fanatasy around that evocative title, incorporating Indian architecture, and with an Appalachian buck dancer and banjo player as a nod to the American-ness of McCartney’s song.
